Wang Chunyu runs in the women's 1500m final at the 14th National Games.(Photo by Fan Bowen/Anhui Daily) Wang Chunyu of Anhui claimed a gold medal in the women’s 1500m final at the 14th National Games in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, on Friday.
Wang clocked 4:16:61, bagging the ninth gold for Anhui province. A total of 15 runners from around the country took part in the event. Wang took the lead basically in the first three laps. She gradually distanced herself from other athletes in the last 100 meters and kept this advantage till the finishing line. Wang set her personal best with 4:08:68 in a track and field event held in Zhaoqing, Guangdong province in April. Born in Suzhou, Anhui in 1995, Wang won a gold in the women’s 800m and a silver in 400m at 14th the National Games, in addition to the gold in 1500m. She finished fifth in the women’s 800m event at the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics, and made history by becoming the first Chinese woman to run in an Olympic 800m final.
