The Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Anhui Province and the Hefei Municipal Government co-hold a press conference on the 19th Hefei Crayfish Festival in Hefei, East China’s Anhui province, on May 26, 2020. The 19th Hefei Crayfish Festival is slated to kick off in late May and run through July in Hefei, capital of East China’s Anhui province, local authorities said at a press conference on Tuesday. The festival will feature a crayfish fishing ceremony, a crayfish promotion in Shanghai and an opening ceremony. The crayfish fishing ceremony is set to be held at the end of May in Lujiang county. Visitors will be able to participate in crayfish fishing activities, savor crayfish-themed food and buy fresh crayfish and “crayfish rice”, planted in the same fields at the same time with crayfish. A promotional event will take place in Shanghai in early June to introduce Hefei’s crayfish, “crayfish rice” and crayfish processed food, and also present the popularity of “Hefei Crayfish” as a famous brand. In addition, the opening ceremony of the festival will be staged in July. The “rice plus crayfish” industry, which features planting rice and raising crayfish in the same fields at the same time, has become a major player in Hefei’s rural revitalization. Covering a total area of 721,000 mu (48,066 ha), the industry employs more than 60,000 people, Xia Lunping, head of the Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Hefei said. The annual output of crayfish reached 61,000 tonnes in the city in 2019, up 29 percent from a year earlier. Meanwhile, the “rice plus crayfish” industry’s sales exceeded 16 billion yuan ($2.2 billion), Xia added.
