Huangshan in East China's Anhui province ranked among the top five Chinese cities with good air quality in 2020, according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. The proportion of days with good air quality in 337 prefecture-level cities reached 87.0 percent last year, up 5.0 percentage points from a year earlier, the ministry said in an annual air quality report. The density of PM 2.5 in those cities fell 8.3 percent year on year to 33 micrograms per cubic meter in 2020. The PM2.5 reading is a gauge monitoring airborne particles of 2.5 microns or less in diameter, which can penetrate deep into lungs. Haikou in Hainan province, Lhasa in the Tibet autonomous region, Zhoushan in Zhejiang province, Xiamen in Fujian province and Huangshan were rated as the cities with best air quality among 168 major cities nationwide, according to the report. In addition, Chizhou, also in Anhui province, ranked 9th in the country in terms of improvement in air quality.
