Hefei, capital of East China's Anhui Province, will be a supplier of Chinese wafers in 2017, as a joint venture between a global industrial leader and local investors is being under construction here, Anhui Business Daily reports.
Main structures of buildings of Hefei Jinghe Co., a company jointly set up by Taiwan Powerchip Technology Corporation and Hefei-based investors, were completed on Wednesday.
The company is expected to go into operation in October 2017, with a monthly capacity of 40,000 12-inch wafers, used as semiconductor materials for the fabrication of integrated circuits (IC).
This will be the first 12-inch IC wafer producer in the province, according to the report.
The project worth 13.53 billion yuan ($1.99 billion) is situated in Xinzhan Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, one of the city’s major industrial quarters.
Founded in Taiwan in 1994, Powerchip Technology Co.is a major maker of memory chips.
In addition, another two LCD-related projects each with an investment of over 10 billion yuan are under way in the zone, the report says.
