Doumu Pottery

Doumu Pottery originated from Qianshan, Anhui Province. The craftsmanship of Doumu pottery has a history of more than 6,000 years, according to the research and excavation in Xuejiagang Site. A large number of unearthed potteries have been recognized as the “living fossil” in the history of pottery making by the archaeologists. Doumu village is the birthplace and main producing area of pottery handmade, with rich argil resources and creative folk artists. In 2008, the craftsmanship of Doumu pottery was involved in the provincial intangible cultural heritage representative list. And it was included in the fifth batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative list in 2021.

There are advantaged making conditions for potteries, with sufficient sunshine, long frost-free period and a large number of high-quality clay for deposition in Doumu village. Pottery making techniques include clay selection, clay drying, sieving, clay kneading, blank-making, air drying, pottery loading, pottery firing, kiln closing, pottery unloading and other processes. Pottery firing is mainly proceeding in an ancient dragon kiln of Doumu village. When the temperature in the kiln up to 1250℃, the metal elements in the greenware is fused with pine resin and wood ash. Even if thousands of identical ceramic billets loading into the kiln, the glaze surface will never be the same when the potteries are uploaded from the kiln.

The clay in Doumu village has high viscosity and plasticity, so the finished pottery has good quality, not only daily life utensils, but also practical works of art.
