
East China’s Anhui province renovated 1.36 million houses in shanty town areas from 2016 to 2020, overfulfiling the target for the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20), local authorities said at a press briefing on December 18.
1.15 million out of them were completed, benefiting more than 3.9 million residents, according to He Maoxie, head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development of Anhui Province. Meanwhile, the province stepped up efforts to carry out the public rental housing program. 946,800 public rental housing apartments were built, bringing the province to the fourth spot in the country. The province is expected to renovate 3,020 old urban residential communities at the end of this year. 1.1 million households will benefit from the renovation. Anhui’s urbanization rate reached 55.81 percent in 2019. The province’s urban areas covered a total area of 2,241.5 square kilometers, up 315.1 square kilometers from 2015. In addition, the province renovated 470,000 dilapidated rural houses during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, ensuring housing safety for 339,000 registered poverty-stricken households.
