Hefei and Huangshan in East China’s Anhui province have been selected as national pilot cities for sports consumption, according to a list released by the General Administration of Sport of China.

The country is carrying out a pilot program to promote innovation in mechanisms, policies, models and products related to sports consumption, gain replicable and applicable experience, scale up sports consumption and upgrade the structure of sports consumption.

The first pilot cities will implement the program from 2020 to 2022. Under the program, they will ensure the supply of land to sports facilities, improve policies on and measures for sports consumption, and make innovations in sports products and services.

The cities will also improve statistical and survey systems for sports consumption, and establish the evaluation system for the pilot work.

The annual output of the sports sector in Hefei reached about 24 billion yuan ($3.5 billion) in 2019. Its industrial value-added output stood at 10 billion yuan. Meanwhile, the city’s per capita sports consumption was around 1,400 yuan.

Huangshan’s sports industrial value-added output accounted for 2.58 percent of the city’s GDP in 2018. Its per capita sports consumption reached 2,430 yuan.
