Forests cover 62.6 million mu (about 4.2 million hectares), accounting for 30.2 percent of the total area of East China’s Anhui province, local authorities said at a news conference on Thursday. “The forest coverage rate reaches 30 percent, which is not only a milestone in the land greening in Anhui province, but also an internationally recognized standard for evaluating regional ecological conditions. It marks that the province has embarked on a new journey towards a strong ecological province,” said Niu Xiangyang, head of the Anhui Provincial Forestry Administration. The province took a slew of measures to increase its forest coverage rate, such as returning grain plots to forestry and launching voluntary tree-planting programs. The province completed an afforestation project of 400,000 mu and restored a total of 700,000 mu of degraded forests in 2021. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Anhui aims to raise the forest coverage rate to 31 percent, according to the official.
