95-year-old Ye Lianping is a retired teacher from Buchen School in Hexian County, Ma'anshan City, Anhui Province. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1986. In 2000, he opened a "left-behind children's home" in his own home to offer free English tutoring to rural children. He has been doing this for 23 years, and has provided voluntary guidance to over 2,000 students. Ye Lianping has no children and lives a simple life, but he has donated all of his savings to establish the "Ye Lianping Scholarship Fund", which awards scholarships to local outstanding students every year. A banner on the wall of the "left-behind children's home" reads "The Candlelight That Never Fades in the Countryside." Ye Lianping says, "At best, I am just a small firefly, and I can't shine as brightly as a candle." He hopes to continue teaching until his last breath.
