The ninth China (Anqing) Huangmei Opera Art Festival kicked off on Sunday in Anqing, east China’s Anhui province.
Jointly hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the provincial government, the festival features Huangmei opera performances, symposiums and art performances. The event, slated to last till October 8, will stage 16 new productions of Huangmei Opera, a form of traditional folk song and dance originating Anhui province. In addition, 12 productions will be broadcast via internet. Most of the performances focus on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC) as this year marks the centennial of the Party. Initiated in 1992, the art festival has developed into the highest-level and most influential Huangmei Opera event in China. Nearly 800 people attended the opening ceremony, including theatrical experts, government officials and businesspeople.
