Hefei, capital of East China’s Anhui province, saw its gross domestic product (GDP) grow 4.3 percent year on year to 1.0045 trillion yuan (about $154.93 billion) in 2020, ranking among China’s top ten provincial capitals for the first time. Guangzhou, capital of South China’s Guangdong province, Chengdu, capital of Southwest China’s Sichuan province, and Hangzhou, capital of East China’s Zhejiang province, took the top three spots in terms of GDP in 2020. They were followed by Wuhan, capital of Central China’s Hubei province, Nanjing, capital of East China’s Jiangsu province, Changsha, capital of Central China’s Hunan province, Zhengzhou, capital of Central China’s Henan province, and Jinan, capital of East China’s Shandong province. Hefei ranked ninth, with Xi’an, capital of Northwest China’s Shaanxi province, coming behind. Hefei, Jinan and Xi’an entered the top ten provincial capitals for the first time. Guangzhou’s GDP exceeded 2.5 trillion yuan, ranking fourth among all the Chinese cities.
