Huangmei Opera originated in Huangmeicounty, Hubei province, formerly known as Huangmei tune, and it now spreads in Anhui’s Anqing city, Hubei’s Huangmei countyand other places.
Tea-picking dittiesfrom Hubei’s Huangmei countywereintroduced to Anhui’s Huaining county and other areain the late Qing Dynasty.Itcombinedwith local folk artsandappliedAnqing dialectfor singing and reciting,which had gradually developedinto a new type of operacalled Huaining tune at that time, which was the earlyHuangmei Opera.Later, Huangmei Opera hadabsorbedthe music, performances and plays of Qingyang tune andthe tuneof Anhui opera. After more than 100 years of development, Huangmei Opera has become a major local opera in Anhui province and a well-known opera in China.
Huangmei Opera is composed of coloratura, chai tune and basic tune with great lyrical and charming features. The singing tune is simple and fresh, delicate and moving, and rich expressive force. It is easy to understand and popular, so the masses are deeply love this kind of opera. There are many well-known plays in Huangmei Opera, the most representative ones are “Tian Xian Pei”, “the Female Prince”and “the Cowherd and the Weaving Maid”.
Huangmei Opera, regarded as one of the five major Chinese operas and national intangible cultural heritage, has profound influence in Chinese culture. However, the prevalent districts of Huangmei opera are shrinking now, and the survival of Huangmei opera troupes at all levels, especially at the county level, is becoming increasingly difficult, which requires caresand supportsfrom the government and the whole society.
