Five students were awarded 120,000 yuan (about $18,792) for avoiding major equipment damages in the laboratory, according to Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale at the University of Science and Technology of China on Nov. 24th. A water leak occurred in a chemistry laboratory and affected the laboratory of quantum computer Jiuzhang downstairs at around 2 am last Sunday. The leak from the upstairs lab attracted the attention of a student in the computer lab first. As he immediately called other students in the neighboring labs to drain water together, and promptly informed the property management, only one computer was damaged in this incident. The reason for those students still at the laboratories at 2 am was that they needed to measure one more set of data after yesterday’s discussion, one professor said. Due to the five students’ timely disposal, huge economic losses and delay of scientific research tasks were avoided. Therefore, the lab decided to award them a total of 120,000 yuan after taxes.
