Ice and snow sports are becoming popular in east China’s Anhui province as it is stepping up efforts to develop winter sports against the backdrop of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games. 12 venues for ice and snow sports have been built around the province, according to the provincial administration of sports. China aimed to engage 300 million people in sport on snow and ice, the State Council, China’s cabinet, said in 2019 in a plan for building a leading sporting nation. Anhui responded actively by ramping up efforts to popularize ice-snow sports. It released a five-year fitness plan on November 24, 2021, vowing to promote the construction of winter sports facilities, encourage more people, including students, to take part in ice-snow sports, and ensure the successful hosting of Anhui Roller Skating Championship. A government fund supports the construction of ice and snow sports facilities this year. 12 venues, eight for ice sports and four for snow sports, have been built, receiving more than 10 million visits. The province will continue to promote the construction of ice-snow sports facilities. Non-governmental investors will be supported in participating in the construction.
