The number of valid invention patents per 10,000 people reached 19.9 in Anhui province in 2021, according to a white paper released on Tuesday. The white paper presents how the eastern Chinese province protected and developed intellectual property rights (IPR) in 2021. The number of valid invention patents stood at 121,700 last year. Meanwhile, more than 1.01 million valid trademarks were registered in the province. Anhui’s patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty, or PCT, skyrocketed 225.8 percent year-on-year to 2,007, the white paper said. 13 trademarks in the province were approved as geographical indications (GI) in 2021, bringing the provincial total to 84. In addition, the province ranked first in the country in terms of number of new GIs in 2021. The province won two golds, two silvers and 26 third-class prizes of the 22nd China Patent Award, hitting an all-time record. The province also issued its first local regulation on IPR protection last year. Courts across the province handled some 11,000 IPR cases, procuratorial organs approved the detention of 135 suspects involved in 65 IPR cases, and police investigated 639 IPR-related cases and arrested 1,088 suspects, the white paper showed.
