In 2022, Hefei's annual GDP reached 1.20131 trillion yuan (approx. 176.7 billion U.S. dollars), an annual increase of 3.5%; Its permanent resident population was 9.634 million, an increase of 169,000 people; 1,834 new national high-tech enterprises were founded... On March 30th, the Hefei Municipal Bureau of Statistics and the Hefei Investigation Team of the National Bureau of Statistics released the Statistical Communiqué of Hefei on National Economy and Social Development in 2022. As it shows, the city's economy was under pressure but still stable, and the overall economic size reached a new level, with new achievements in high-quality development.
Industrial Sector: LCD production increased by 53.4% year on year
The Communiqué shows that there were 2,485 industrial enterprises above the designated size in Hefei at the end of the year, a gain of 266 from the previous year. Among them, there were 884 enterprises with an output value of over 100 million yuan, a gain of 25. The added value of industrial enterprises above the designated size rose by 6.3% over the previous year.
In terms of industries, 23 out of 37 major industrial categories successfully maintained growth in 2022. Among them, the added value of the automobile manufacturing industry rose by 29.2%, and that of the special equipment manufacturing industry and the electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing industry both grew by 26.2%. The export delivery value of the industrial enterprises above the designated size increased by 9.8% over the previous year.
Among the main products of industrial enterprises above the designated size, the production of LCDs saw an increase of 53.4% compared to the previous year, industrial robots increased by 37.8%, new energy vehicles (NEVs) increased by 37.2%, integrated circuits increased by 27.6%, and solar cells increased by 23.1%.
The industrial enterprises above the designated size achieved a profit of 43.879 billion yuan in 2022, a decrease of 21.7% from the previous year. Among them, the production and supply of electricity, heating, gas, and water surged by 1.9 times to 953 million yuan. The cost per 100 yuan of operating income was 86.78 yuan, up 2.13 yuan over the previous year.
The added value of the construction industry was 179.15 billion yuan in 2022, an annual increase of 5.3% at constant prices. At the end of the year, there were 2,020 general contracting and specialized contracting construction enterprises with qualification levels, an increase of 177 from the previous year. Among them, there were 66 enterprises with an output value of over 1 billion yuan and the number of enterprises with an output value of over 10 billion yuan grew from 11 to 13.

At the end of the year, there were 3,975 enterprises in wholesale and retail, accommodation and catering above the quota, 86 more than the previous year. Among the retail sales of goods above the quota, the sales of traditional Chinese and Western medicines had a marked gain of 31.5%, books, newspapers, and magazines went up by 17.1%, cultural and office supplies went up by 11.8%, petroleum and related products went up by 10.0%, and automotive products went up by 5.3%.
In the category of green intelligent products, the retail sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs), smart home appliances and audiovisual equipment, smartphones, and wearable smart devices surged by 2.4 times, 2.9 times, 1.1 times, and 0.9 times, respectively.
Regarding foreign trade, the total import and export value for the year went up 8.6% year on year to 3,610.95 billion yuan. Among them, exports grew 13.4% to 230.18 billion yuan and imports grew 1.1% to 130.91 billion yuan. Mechanical and electrical products accounted for a 14.4% increase in exports.
140 new foreign-invested enterprises were established in Hefei during the year. Foreign direct investment reached 1.205 billion US dollars, an increase of 4.5%. The newly signed contract value for foreign contracted projects increased considerably by 40.5%, reaching 4.689 billion US dollars, while the operating income had a marginal increase of 1.2%, reaching 1.639 billion US dollars.
At the end of the year, the number of foreign-invested corporations established by 49 oversea Fortune Global 500 companies in Hefei was 70, 1 more than the number in 2021. The international routes of China-Europe Railway Express(Hefei) now cover 18 countries and 90 cities with a total of 768 trips made during the year, an increase of 100 trips compared to the previous year.
Social Security: Per capita disposable income of urban residents went up 5.6% The per capita disposable income of residents in Hefei in 2022 registered an increase of 6.1% over the previous year, reaching 48,820 yuan, while the per capita consumption expenditure was 28,966 yuan, up 2.7%.
By place of residence, the per capita disposable income of urban residents was 56,177 yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.6%; the per capita consumption expenditure of urban residents was 32,964 yuan, an increase of 1.6%. The per capita disposable income of rural residents was 28,727 yuan, a year-on-year increase of 7.0%; the per capita consumption expenditure of rural residents was 18,044 yuan, an increase of 6.6%.
At the end of the year, the number of people participating in urban workers' endowment (excluding government agencies, including retired employees), medical (maternity), unemployment, and work injury insurance was 3.707 million, 2.809 million, 2.306 million, and 2.481 million, respectively. The number of people insured or renewed for urban and rural residents' endowment insurance was 2.912 million.
In addition, the number of urban and rural residents insured for basic medical insurance was 5.534 million, with a rate of participation of 99.8%. The urban and rural medical assistance system subsidized 215,000 people and directly assisted 788,900 people. The expenditure of medical assistance funds totaled 433 million yuan, including 74 million yuan in subsidized insurance and 359 million yuan in direct assistance.
Science and Education: Three national large-scale scientific facilities completed
At the end of the year, there were 58 tertiary education institutions in Hefei (including adult education institutions, excluding military schools), including nine graduate education institutions. The institutions made 26,600 graduate admissions throughout 2022 and there were 78,200 enrolled graduate students and 16,200 graduates. The number of undergraduate and junior college entrants totaled 191,400; the numbers of enrolled students and graduates were 660,600 and 179,700 respectively.
At the end of the year, there were 71 working stations for academicians and 138 academicians from the two academies serving in Hefei. There were 12 national (key) laboratories and 128 provincial (key) laboratories. There were 107 science and technology enterprise incubators at or above the municipal level, including 24 at the national and 49 at the provincial level. There were 122 public innovation spaces at or above the municipal level, including 28 national and 41 provincial ones.
A total of 5,792 scientific and technological achievements were registered throughout the year, including 381 supported by financial funds. There were 59,300 authorized patents, recording an increase of 10.2% over the previous year. There were also 54,100 valid invention patents at the end of the year. A total of 14,929 technology export contracts were signed, with a turnover of 64.744 billion yuan, up 48.6%; 8,274 technology absorption contracts were signed, with a turnover of 43.598 billion yuan, up 1.1%. Environment: Good air quality days reached 314, a new high in 10 years
According to the Communiqué, there were six municipal and county-level environmental monitoring stations at the end of the year. The equivalent sound level of regional noise was 58.5 decibels, and that of road traffic noise was 68.8 decibels. The annual average concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) was 32.3 micrograms per cubic meter, down 0.3% from the previous year. The annual average concentrations of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide were 8 micrograms per cubic meter and 31 micrograms per cubic meter, respectively. The daily average concentration of carbon monoxide was 1 milligram per cubic meter, and the maximum 8-hour average concentration of ozone was 152 micrograms per cubic meter.
The number of days with good air quality throughout 2022 was 314, accounting for 86%, reaching a new high in the past 10 years. Heavy pollution weather has been eliminated, and air quality has maintained the national second-level standard for two consecutive years. All 20 national monitoring sections have reached the standard, with an 85% rate of good water quality. The overall water quality of the Chaohu Lake area has continued to improve, and the water quality of the main tributaries around the lake is good. The compliance rate of the quality of centralized drinking water sources at or above the county level is 100%. The radiation environment is of good quality.
