Anhui province is set to kick off an agricultural fair in Shanghai on Dec 31 as the eastern Chinese province seeks to expand farm produce market and attract investment to its agricultural sector.
About 450 companies and over 80 co-ops and family farms from around the province will attend the event at Shanghai International Agricultural Exhibition Center from Dec 31 to Jan 2.
“We will provide more than 2,500 kinds of products in 12 categories such as cereals, meat, sea food, fruit, tea and handicrafts for Shanghainese to fill their ‘vegetable baskets’ and ‘rice bags’ at the turn of the year,” Wang Hua, deputy head of the organizing committee said.
More than 450 purchasers from around the country, mostly from Shanghai and the East China region, will be present at the fair. They hail from supermarkets, vegetable wholesale markets, hotels, restaurants, colleges, companies and e-commerce platforms.
The three-day event will also include a contract-signing ceremony. Contracts on 103 agricultural programs worth 12.68 billion yuan (US$1.84 billion) are expected to be signed.
Meanwhile, the province will launch a campaign to promote agri-tourism, with itineraries in Huangshan and Ningguo and rural attractions like Xiaogang village in Fengyang, Sangua Commune in Chaohu, Matouxiang in Jingxian and Youran Valley in Jingde as the focus.
The fair in its 19th year is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the provincial government of Anhui.
Anhui's agricultural goods have a large market share in Shanghai. Statistics showed in 2011, 12 percent of agro-products in the municipality came from Anhui.
