The gross domestic product (GDP) of Hefei, capital of East China’s Anhui province, reached 235.6 billion yuan in the first quarter of 2021, up 22.6 percent from the same period a year ago, the local bureau of statistics said. The city saw the highest economic growth among the 27 cities in the Yangtze River Delta region in the first three months this year, outshining Shanghai (17.6 percent), Nanjing (16 percent), capital of Jiangsu province, and Hangzhou (18.3 percent), capital of Zhejiang province. The region consists of Shanghai and Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces. Hefei’s value-added output of industrial enterprises above designated size - those with an annual revenue of at least 20 million yuan - rose 44.7 percent, higher than the national average of 24.5 percent and the provincial average of 26.3 percent. The industrial growth brought the city to the first place in Anhui and the second among major cities of the Yangtze River Delta region. The automobile industry is emerging as one of the major driving forces behind Hefei’s rapid growth. Up to 225,000 vehicles were produced in the city between January and March, representing a year-on-year surge of 86 percent. 24,300 of them were new energy vehicles, up 358 percent year on year. The value-added output of strategic emerging industries increased 57.3 percent in the first quarter. The value-added output of the new energy vehicle industry, the digital creative industry, the new energy industry and the new-generation information technology industry went up 110.5 percent, 97.8 percent, 68.6 percent and 57.4 percent, respectively.
