The Yangtze River Delta region, which consists of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces and Shanghai municipality, saw a surging number of China-Europe cargo trains in operation in the Jan-Feb period this year. Up to 523 trains were operated between the region and destinations in Central Asia and Europe during the first two months, up 127 percent from the same period a year ago, according to local rail authorities. Some 50,700 TEUs of goods were transported by the trains, representing a year-on-year increase of 125 percent. On Feb 16 alone, 13 cargo trains departed the region, hitting a record high on a daily basis. The China-Europe train services played a major role in ensuring the stability of international industrial and supply chains and promoting Sino-European cooperation in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, said Liu Xilin, general manager of the Shanghai branch of China Railway Container Transport Corp (CRCT). Since 2020, the trains have delivered 6,103 tonnes of medical suppliers from the region to European countries including Poland, Germany, Russia and Finland, according to Liu. 18 routes have been launched since 2013, linking the region with 37 cities in more than 20 European and Asian countries.
