China's Ministry of Public Security on Wednesday reported a better traffic situation nationwide during the seven-day Lunar New Year holiday, which started on Feb 15.

The number of both traffic accidents and their casualties dropped year on year, the ministry said, without disclosing the exact figures.

Three police officers, however, died on duty during the holiday, according to the ministry.

The Chinese Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, is the most important festival on the Chinese calendar. Police faced high pressure to maintain traffic safety during the travel peak as more Chinese people now drive.
