The reporter learned from the Ionic Medicine Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of University of Science and Technology of China (Hefei Ionic Medicine Center) on February 28 that the first two tumor patients enrolled in the clinical trial successfully completed treatment and discharged from hospital.
Experts from the Center introduced, compared with traditional radiotherapy, proton therapy is characterized by only targeted irradiation of the lesions, reducing the impact on the surrounding normal organs and tissues, in order to have more concentrated energy irradiation of tumors, to obtain better therapeutic effects. Proton therapy has a wide range of indications, especially for tumor lesions growing in complex locations, such as eyes, skull base and so on, which has the advantage of precise treatment.
On December 30, 2021, the Center officially performed proton therapy on the first two tumor patients enrolled. The first patient was a 66-year-old male with recurrent chordoma of the sacral tail. The treatment process of the patient was guaranteed by an expert team composed of medical treatment, nursing, physics and technicians. All the indicators showed good treatment effect. The other patient was a 38-year-old woman with NK/T cell lymphoma. After proton therapy, radiographs showed significant reduction of the nasal lump and resolution of nasal congestion.
In October 2015, the project of Hefei Ion Medical Center was launched, which is a modern cancer treatment institution with proton radiation therapy as the main treatment method. In July last year, the first Affiliated Hospital of USTC (Anhui Provincial Hospital) obtained the proton radiotherapy system configuration license, becoming the first unit in Anhui province to obtain the configuration license.
