Looking China · Anhui|Group Interview (4) Hongcun, a village of landscape and people

Pub Date:24-05-06 15:01 Source:Looking China · Youth Film Project

Topic Introduction

Like a bull, Leigang Mountain at the western end of Hongcun's village is the head. The two huge trees (poplar and ginkgo) are the horns and the village itself constitutes the bull's body. The central lake, Lunar Swamp, is the stomach, and the larger southern lake is the abdomen. In front of and behind the village, there are four bridges across the Caliente River, representing the ox-legged. This elaborate layout is very wise and practical, and the street planning, landscaping, architecture, decoration and integration of houses with the integrated water system are still of great value and use today. We wanted to use the ox-shaped village as a theme to show its cultural, natural and human flavour.

Group interview

1.Why do you choose the theme of "Scenery of Hongcun"?

I chose this theme becausethe ancient village of Hongcun seemed one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen. Its typical architecture, protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, makes it a true postcard.

2.Did you encounter someone or something unforgettable during the shooting?

This project gave me the opportunity to meet the famous Mr. Wang. A craftsman who carves in wood. He was the first person I met upon arriving in Hongcun. He was the one who introduced me to the village and he will be the voice that guides us through our film.

3.Did you encounter any difficulties during the shooting process?

One of the biggest difficulties during filming was undoubtedly the language barrier because despite having Lisa's essential help, the fact of not immediately knowing what someone was saying to me, made it difficult to have a conversation.

4.Do you have any expectations for this short film?

I'm hoping to make a film that I'm proud to show when I return to my country, but at the same time makes proud and does justice to the hosts of this project.

5. What new techniques did you use for this shoot?

Our film is mostly being filmed with a long focal length lens which allows us to get closer to the subject and the details and textures of the village.
