"Anhui opera should be refined and elevated. We should incorporate the essence of various theatrical genres to create new voices and styles for Anhui opera!" On the evening of December 7th, the Anhui opera "Huiban" (opera troupes from Anhui) made its debut at the Zijin Grand Theatre in Jiangsu. As soon as the character "Xiao Jiaotian," played by Wang Yushu, finished speaking, thunderous applause erupted from the audience.

Over 200 years ago, the four prominent Huiban opera troupes, namely 'Sanqing,' 'Sixi,' 'Hechun,' and 'Chuntai,' made their way to Beijing. They showcased their talents on the stage, captivating audiences from different social classes with their diverse repertoire, popular lyrics, and varied singing styles. After the integration of Hui and Han operas, performances and repertoire formed distinctive characteristics and styles, ultimately leading to the quintessential Chinese opera, Beijing Opera and pushing the traditional Chinese opera to new heights.

The Anhui opera 'Huiban,' performed by the Anhui Huijing Opera Troupe and starring Wang Yushu, a recipient of the prestigious Plum Blossom Award for Drama, takes the grand event of the integration of Hui and Han operas as its background. It artistically reenacts the journey of the 18th-century Anhui opera troupes, supported by Anhui merchants, as they performed in Beijing. It showcases the story of how the Huiban nurtured the birth of the national treasure, Beijing Opera, and embarked on a glorious journey that led to the prosperity of Chinese traditional opera. It highlights their unwavering commitment to artistic ideals and their valuable quality of promoting the preservation and innovation of the art of opera.

From November 29th to January 17th, 2024, the 'New Era, New Huiban, New Outlook' High-Quality Plays Exhibition will organize eight theater troupes from Anhui province, presenting a total of twelve outstanding productions in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, and several other cities within the province. This series of performances, totaling 21 shows, aims to demonstrate the high-quality and comprehensive achievements of Anhui's cultural and artistic development, showcasing the unique charm of Anhui's cultural traditions and regional characteristics.

"From north to south, from the Anhui opera 'The Story of Liu Ming-chuan' to 'Huiban,' as performers, we deeply feel the audience's high level of attention and interest in Anhui opera. This attention and recognition bring us pressure but also motivate us to move forward," says Wang Yushu. In the new era, the new generation of Huiban should inherit the spirit of the traditional Huiban. "They should embrace a diverse range of influences, be inclusive, adhere to tradition while innovating, and present captivating stories using new technologies and expressive methods. This will ensure that Anhui opera remains fresh and vibrant, constantly renewing its vitality."
