Recently, three national first-class protected animals, Dalmatian pelicans, or Pelecanus crispus, visited Chaohu Lake. It is the first time this species has been spotted around Chaohu Lake. "There are less than 150 Dalmatian pelicans in East Asia." Yu Lei, a bird expert from the Chaohu Biological Resources Survey Team, said, "Last year, two Dalmatian pelicans were recorded near the Yangtze River in Wuhu; in 2006, one was recorded in Hefei Dongpu Reservoir. They have very high requirements for the living environment, which means the ecological environment of Chaohu Lake is getting better and better!" The good ecological environment and rich food resources of the wetlands around Chaohu Lake have attracted many migratory birds to spend the winter or summer. Some rare migratory birds have also become "frequent visitors" to the wetlands. Last year, 287 species of birds were recorded around Chaohu Lake, the highest record ever recorded.
