Huangmei opera 'Dream of the Red Chamber' debuted in Shanghai

On January 9th, the traditional Huangmei opera "Dream of the Red Chamber" was splendidly performed at the Shanghai Yihai Theater, portraying the charm and philosophical thoughts of the classic masterpiece.

This play was created and performed by the Anhui Huangmei Opera Theater. It was led by He Yun, a national first-class performer and recipient of the China Theatre Plum Blossom Award. He Yun explained that the production focuses on the personal activities of Jia Baoyu, with the love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu as a secondary plot. It strengthens the image of Jia Baoyu as a rebel under the feudal system, telling the audience a deeply moving love story and providing philosophical enlightenment.

The youthful and beautiful cast, exquisite and emotional stage presentation, and the graceful charm of Huangmei opera received rounds of applause from the live audience. Ms. Wang, a theater enthusiast from Shanghai, was deeply impressed by the performance and praised it repeatedly.

"Dream of the Red Chamber" is one of the classic productions of the Anhui Huangmei Opera Theater. The play was first staged by the theater in 1991, and a youth version of "Dream of the Red Chamber" was restaged in 2004. Through the superb performances of two generations of artists and decades of refinement, the production has become a high-quality masterpiece with wide influence and enduring popularity.

It is reported that from November 29th, 2023 to January 17th of this year, the "New Era, New Huiban (opera troupes from Anhui), New Outlook" Exhibition of High-Quality Plays, jointly organized by the Publicity Department of CPC Anhui Provincial Committee, Anhui Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, and Anhui Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles, has organized 8 theater troupes from the province to present 12 outstanding productions in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, and some cities within the province, with a total of 21 wonderful performances. This performance is the first show of the exhibition in Shanghai.
