On June 28, Du ping, a national-level inheritor of intangible cultural heritage, showed his bronze carving work of "The Long March" to visitors at his studio in Fuyang City, Anhui Province.

Bronze carving is the carving of images on bronze ware with a knife. Carved on a white copper plate, "The Long March" is about 160 centimeters long and 60 centimeters wide, with a total weight of more than 60 kilograms. It portrays a scene during the Red Army's Long March, an epic trek in the history of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Mr. Du Ping, a national-level inheritor of bronze carving and a researcher at the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center (CICHPC), began planning to create an artwork about China's revolution as a gift to the CPC's centenary two years ago and he eventually chose the Long March as the theme.

"The creation of this work is based on countless careful thoughts about the layout and details of the scene. Sometimes, a single detail could cost me hours to contemplate, such as the look in a soldier's eyes, the way he walks, the way he stands, and so on." said Mr. Du, "Unlike painting on papers, a small mistake in bronze carving can ruin the whole bronze ware, so you must deliberate cautiously before you start."

After two years of hard work, the artist was finally able to present this special gift which depicts the historic journey happened nearly a century ago. It vividly portrays the harsh conditions and the different expressions and movements of over 100 soldiers when they proceed along a tortuous mountain path. (Photo by Wang Biao)
