The sixth day of the first lunar month, which is also known as Horse Day, is usually the last day of the Spring Festival holiday. People will restart their work and business activities after today. On this day, the main activity is “getting away from poverty”, which means worshiping the god of poverty. This is a special traditional Chinese folk custom. In Anhui province, people will clean out the garbage. Businessmen will set off firecrackers to ring out the poverty and bad luck. Although people in different regions apply various ways to worship the god of poverty, the common purpose is to end the poverty. These activities reflect Chinese people’s expectation for a better life in the new year. According to the old customs, people won’t start working or doing businesses until the sixth day of the Spring Festival. On this day, shops open, which is also known as ‘Qi Shi’. Business people will set off firecrackers to celebrate the opening of new year’s businesses, and wish for a booming business in the new year. Today, people can do cleaning works. Farmers also start to grow crops. The eggs are dubbed as the “Chinese golden ingots” in Lujiang county, Anhui Province. When people pay New Year calls to their relatives, a plate of boiled eggs are prepared for them. As guests eat more eggs, they will make more money in the new year.
