On the afternoon of March 29, another weekend, the first‑floor atrium of Wanda Plaza in Baohe District, Hefei, hosted four neatly arranged standard ping-pong tables, surrounded by crowds of eager spectators. At the referee’s whistle the silver balls flew and the ping‑pong sounds mixed with cheers to become the most dynamic melody of spring. This was the scene of the qualification round for the 2026 Anhui Table Tennis League (known as the “Hui Ping Tournament”).

Since the province‑wide launch on March 7, this mass‑participation sports event covering 104 counties (cities, districts) has been fiercely contested for four weeks, becoming a bona fide “weekend festival” across the Yangtze‑Huaihe region. Registration has now officially topped the 100,000 mark.

From its inception, the Hui Ping Tournament opened its arms to the public with a “full coverage, zero‑threshold” approach. Competition zones were set up simultaneously in 16 cities and 104 counties (cities, districts), with 105 venues in total, making it the country’s first provincial mass table tennis league to achieve county‑level coverage within a single season. This format has truly brought the national sport of table tennis into ordinary households.

The data are the strongest proof. Since registration opened, the Hui Ping Tournament has been breaking participation records in Anhui’s mass sports at an astonishing pace. Chuzhou led the way by surpassing 10,000 registrants first; Hefei and Bengbu followed closely, each with more than 8,000 registrants.

Players from outside the province and even from abroad have joined — ping‑pong enthusiasts from Singapore and Malaysia traveled to Anhui specifically to compete, and players from neighboring provinces such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Jiangxi have come in steady streams.

Moving the competition from traditional gymnasiums into bustling commercial complexes is a major innovation of the Hui Ping Tournament. At large malls such as Hefei Baohe Wanda, Wuhu Jinghu Suning and Anqing Wuyue Plaza, the event is deeply integrated with consumer spaces, producing unexpected synergies. Reporters at several venues observed that the competition area is separated from the shopping area by only a barrier, allowing shoppers to watch up close as they stroll. Many, after cheering on matches, walk straight into nearby sporting goods stores to buy paddles and sneakers.

“This weekend foot traffic at the mall increased by more than 30% compared with usual,” the duty manager at Baohe Wanda Plaza told reporters. During the event, lines in dining areas noticeably lengthened, and sales at sporting goods counters doubled.

Statistics show that Wanda Plaza in Taihe County saw average daily footfall of about 50,000 during the event — a year‑on‑year increase of 35% — with average daily sales exceeding RMB 1.6 million. This “competition‑drives‑consumption” model is a vivid example of Anhui promoting the integration of sports, commerce, culture and tourism.

An official from the Provincial Sports Bureau explained: “We are committed to promoting scenario‑based and integrated event development. By optimizing competition formats and lowering thresholds, we bring events into business districts, attractions and neighborhoods to achieve deep integration of sports with everyday consumption, further enhancing the event’s reach, attractiveness and potential for sports‑related spending.”

From the mild springs of March to the golden autumn of October, the drums of the Hui Ping Tournament will continue to beat. The event conveys not only the competitive beauty of flying silver balls but also a people‑centered spirit of sport. When mall tables become stages for ordinary people and ping‑pong sounds become the soundtrack of daily life, Anhui’s sports scene is carving out its own brilliant rhythm in the era of national fitness.
