In city streets, as economic and social development progresses, some aging public facilities built many years ago have low usage efficiency and limited potential for renovation. Is it possible to reasonably address this situation? On July 9, reporters learned from the Anhui Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development that the province will integrate urban renewal actions with the construction of new urban infrastructure to comprehensively promote the upgrading and enhancement of municipal public facility construction and management.

In recent years, through urban renewal initiatives, Anhui Province has actively advanced the demolition of various old and ineffective municipal public facilities. For example, Hefei City has established a "detailed inspection and rapid response" mechanism, relying on intelligent monitoring and big data analysis to conduct comprehensive screening of municipal facilities across the city, and to clear facilities that are severely damaged and beyond repair.

The province prioritizes the demolition of facilities that affect public safety and have no renovation potential, in accordance with the principle of “retain, renovate, or demolish,” thereby freeing up space for new projects. To revitalize underutilized public facilities, Anhui is accelerating the exploration of functional integration and digital empowerment for inefficient facilities. For instance, Hefei has carried out lighting renovations in the “dark light zones” of the High-tech Zone, increasing the lighting rate to 100% and activating the vitality of nighttime public spaces.

Going forward, Anhui Province will combine urban renewal efforts with the construction of new urban infrastructure, systematically advancing the upgrading and enhancement of municipal public facility construction and management. This will include systematic implementation of gas and drainage pipeline network renovations, expansion of greenways and parking spaces, and coverage of urban lifeline safety projects, continuously improving urban functionality and vitality to better meet residents’ demands for a high-quality urban life.
