On November 25, the Sanya Sports Center hosted a feast of visuals and culture as the indoor performance events of the 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities of the People's Republic of China took place. The Bench Dragon performance from Anhui garnered particular attention. Among many exciting performances, the Bench Dragon presented by the Anhui delegation showcased its unique folk art form and allowed the audience to deeply appreciate the charm of traditional culture and the pride of regional heritage. The Bench Dragon, also known as the Meizhu Lantern, is a traditional folk activity widely practiced in southern provinces and cities of China. It is said to have originated in the Han Dynasty, evolving from religious activities aimed at praying for rain. The Bench Dragon consists of a dragon pearl, dragon head, dragon tail, and dragon body, with the large red lantern on the bench symbolizing bountiful harvests. The dragon head is raised high while the dragon tail dancer bends and twists on the ground, performing the "Jade Dragon Rains," symbolizing national prosperity and peace. The movements create a swirling effect, reminiscent of a dragon gliding over the sea in "Earth Dragon Gazes at the Moon," representing blessings from all directions. The stationary dragon head with a rotating, grinding motion of the dragon tail forms a high tower-like shape known as "Golden Dragon Coiling the Pillar," symbolizing continuous progress. Anhui's Bench Dragon organically blends elements of dance, martial arts, and Huagu Lantern art, showcasing the spirit of unity among the people of Anhui in promoting Chinese path to modernization in the new era. This sports event not only serves as a grand athletic competition but also as a platform for cultural exchange. While several provinces presented dragon elements, Anhui's Bench Dragon is truly unique. The Bench Dragon originates from the national intangible cultural heritage of the "Banlong" from Xiu'ning county in Huangshan, Anhui. Through adaptation and integration of various regional cultural elements, it has presented a more distinctive expression of Anhui's cultural heritage.
