As a five-term National People's Congress(NPC) deputy, Liu Qingfeng, chairman of iFlytek, has been fulfilling his duties for 21 consecutive years. In both the 2021 and 2022 NPC annual sessions, he focused on issues related to aging. This year, he once again put forth a motion around "caring for the elderly population with artificial intelligence to ensure a happy retirement life".

Liu's concern on elderly population for three consecutive years

In recent years, China's population aging has been accelerating. According to the latest projected data released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs, during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the population of people over 60 in China will exceed 300 million, marking a transition from a mildly aging society to a moderately aging society.

In the face of the upcoming "Age Wave", ensuring people's happiness and satisfaction in later life has become a trending topic during the Two Sessions. For Liu Qingfeng, how to build an aging-friendly environment has also been a topic of concern in multiple NPC annual sessions.

During the 2021 Two Sessions, Liu proposed that relevant departments should increase their overall efforts in caring for key groups such as the elderly, and establish relevant standards and norms. He also advised actively evaluating and identifying successful pilot cases and rapidly promoting them nationwide.

During the 2022 Two Sessions, Liu put forward a motion related to the shortage of elderly care workers and the transformation of achievements in rehabilitation and safety monitoring robots. He suggested promoting research on companion robots, especially strengthening technological innovation and product support, with the aim of improving the happiness index of senior citizens and providing them with companionship and care.

During this year's Two Sessions, Liu Qingfeng will once again submit a motion on "caring for the elderly population with artificial intelligence to ensure a happy retirement life". What he will propound this time includes establishing a special research program on using artificial intelligence to care for the elderly; encouraging the application of AI technology to safety guarding, housekeeping, and emotional support for the elderly; preventing unexpected accidents through intelligent means; strongly supporting the R&D of home care robots and companion robots; promoting the integration of robots into households; and leveraging AI technology for an enjoyable retirement life.

According to Liu Qingfeng, it is important to support the R&D of integrated hardware and software technology tailored to empty nesters' needs. This will help establish an intelligent backup service system based on human-machine collaboration, providing care and guaranteeing the safety and well-being of empty nesters.

Furthermore, Liu also suggested that elderly-oriented technologies should be included in the national development strategy, and that artificial intelligence should be deployed to improve the quality of life and happiness index of the elderly, thereby contributing to the building of Healthy China.

Significant Achievements in AI Empowering Elderly Care

Liu Qingfeng said that in places like Tianjin and Anhui, iFlytek is exploring a 7x24-hour closed-loop safety guarding pattern for senior citizens based on AI-advanced eldercare ability and intelligent warning models.

Currently, iFlytek has developed a comprehensive intelligent service platform named "Smart Elderly Care", which aims at integrating AI into old people's daily life services and safeguarding so that the elderly population will be able to benefit from the results of information technology development in their own backyards and enjoy higher quality elderly life as a result. This people-centered platform has been implemented in multiple places such as Tianjin. It has established a comprehensive elderly care service system to help the elderly cross the "digital divide", focusing on six service directions including safety guarding, health care, government services, daily life convenience, emotional care, and rehabilitation aids.

"Advancing technology-enabled elderly care not only concerns the goldern agers but also has a substantial influence on the future lives of each and every one of us," said Liu Qingfeng. He also stated that iFlytek would actively explore more scenarios where technology can empower elderly care, bringing more elderly people technology support with a warm heart.
