Frost's Descent (霜降) comes as autumn gives way to winter and the days grow colder.
In northern Anhui, white radishes are in season. Freshly picked radishes are slow-cooked with pork belly in a clay pot, soaking up all that rich, savory flavor. It's just the kind of hearty meal you want on a chilly day.
There's an old Chinese saying: “Eat radish during Frost's Descent, and it's better than ginseng.” It's a time-honored food tradition that celebrates the flavors of the season.
