Grain Buds (Chinese: 小满) is the second solar term of summer in the traditional Chinese calendar. It marks the moment when things begin to grow fuller, though not yet fully ripe. In Huizhou, mung bean cake is a classic early-summer treat. Made from finely ground mung bean flour, sugar, and osmanthus, it’s soft, delicate, and lightly fragrant. For locals, mung bean cake is more than a dessert. It reflects a seasonal way of eating—cooling the body, easing the heat, and slowing things down as summer quietly settles in.
