As one of the traditional solar terms in China, the End of Heat marks the end of the scorching summer and the beginning of the cool autumn. Releasing river lanterns is one of the important customs of the End of Heat. The base of the river lanterns is often in the shape of a lotus, symbolizing purity and elegance. People place light holders or candles on the base to make river lanterns, which are then released into rivers, expressing people's longing for a better life.
