More than 100 million train trips were made in the Yangtze River Delta during the summer vacation, 71.3 percent of the number in the same period a year ago, China Railway Shanghai Group Co. said on Tuesday.

The region, consisting of Shanghai and Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces, recorded 100.45 million rail trips over 62 days as of August 31, or a daily average of 1.62 million, accounting for 22.4 percent of the national total during the same period, according to the company.

Railway stations in the region handled 1.97 million trips on August 29, a daily record after the Spring Festival.

Extra trains were operated on routes like Shanghai-Nanjing, Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong and Nangjing-Hangzhou as well as in Anhui, Xuzhou and coastal regions.

The Shangqiu-Hefei-Hangzhou high-speed railway, which opened in June, recorded 3.76 million summer trips, exceeding expectations, the company said.

Rail authorities in the region worked together with local tourism sector to operate tourist-dedicated trains as cross-province tourism resumed in mid-July. 20 train services have been launched for tourists in the region this summer, up 900 percent year on year, according to the company.
