Anhui's energy consumption per unit of industrial added value declined 5.2 percent year on year between January and May, indicating greater efficiency in energy use, according to the provincial commission of economy and information technology.

The eastern Chinese province’s energy consumption per unit of added value in the industrial sector dropped 5.85 percent in the first quarter of 2018.

Energy consumption in industrial firms with annual turnover over 20 million yuan ($3.17 million) reached 38.94 million tonnes of standard coal equivalent during the Jan-May period, up 2.95 percent from the same period a year ago.

Power, gas and water supply sectors, major forces behind the growth in energy use, together posted a 11.67 percent year-on-year rise, the commission said.

By contrast, petrochemical, chemical, steel, nonferrous metal and building material manufacturers experienced a year-on-year decrease in energy consumption in the first five months.
