As a major project of emerging industry in Anhui, Wuhu Terahertz Engineering Center, jointly invested by Tus- New Material Group and Wuhu City, has gone smoothly since its launch in October , 2016. As of now, 200 million yuan of investment has been poured into the project. The engineering center has been listed as a provincial engineering center by Anhui provincial government and the application for national engineering center is under way.
According to the leader of Tus- New Material Group, the project has achieved significant progress in infrastructure construction, talent team building, advance research and development of core technologies, preparation for the engineering of the products, and supporting construction of the industrial park.
According to the plan , 900 million yuan will be invested to build production lines of epitaxial growth, chip manufacturing, packaging and testing for 4-6-inch third-generation semiconductors. “If everything goes well, the first pilot scale production line will be formally put into service within the year of 2018.”
The total investment of the Wuhu Terahertz Engineering Center reaches 1.45 billion yuan. The project plans to use 109 mu of land in two phases. The center focuses on the third-generation semiconductor chips that are urgently needed in the industries of future 5G communications, new energy, and big data, and specializes in a public R&D platform that integrates material production, devices, and module processing and manufacturing.
With this platform, through the close cooperation between government and Tus- New Material Group , relying on strong talents and the integration capabilities of upstream and downstream industries to build an innovation and entrepreneurship base, a good environment for the development of the third-generation semiconductor industry will soon be formed. It is expected that the platform will give birth to a brand-new strategic emerging industry in Wuhu City and even in Anhui Province.
It is learned that the third-generation semiconductors, “ 3rd-G semiconductors for short” , can be widely used in power electronics, microwave electronics and optoelectronics. It is the chip to support the development of the industries of 5G communications, aerospace, Internet of things, the Internet, new energy vehicles and big data.
The third-generation semiconductors, described as “the country’s most important instrument,” is of great strategic significance in supporting the development of emerging industries, enhancing the competitiveness of traditional industries, realizing the civil-military integration, and the replacement of old growth drivers with new ones.
