The Red Cross Society of Anhui launched a series of campaigns in the provincial capital Hefei between May 7 and 8 to commemorate the 71st World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
During the period, a team was found to publicize and promote the donation of hematopoietic stem cells, and to better serve volunteer donors. Teams at the municipal level will also be set up. The total number of team members is expected to exceed 500.
45,000 volunteers from around the province were registered in the Chinese Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donors Database, with 127 donations having been made.
In addition, the organization held a meeting featuring some stem cell donors’ moving stories. Chen Wanming, the 7000th volunteer who signed up with the China Marrow Donor Program (CMDP), and Zhang Xiuli, the 1st stem cell donor in Huaibei, shared their donation stories as well as the following changes in life.
Hematopoietic stem cells are dubbed “seeds of life” as their transplants are used in the treatment of cancers and other immune system disorders.
The local Red Cross Society launched another campaign: “in search of seeds of life”, calling upon those 45,000 hematopoietic stem cell donor volunteers to build up contacts with the organization and inform the public of the donation of hematopoietic stem cells, in a bid to attract more volunteers to the database.
The World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is celebrated worldwide on May 8 every year.
