China and France jointly opened a research center of nuclear fusion Thursday in Hefei, capital of East China’s Anhui province, as part of their efforts to coordinate in areas of fusion science and experimental physics.

The facility was set up under an agreement between the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). The Institute of Plasma Physics, an arm of the Anhui-based Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, is among the major members of the center.

The research center will provide technical support for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Organization as well as its members, and launch competitive bidding for programs of common concern. Its members will work together to carry out research into fusion science and experimental physics, map out safety specifications and technical standards for nuclear fusion energy, and prepare for the next generation of nuclear reactors.
