28,000 runners from home and abroad took part in the 2017 Hefei International Marathon on Sunday in Hefei, capital of East China’s Anhui province.
In the men’s race, Abdi Ibrahim Abdo from Bahrain won in 2:12:00. Mike Kiprotich Mutai from Kenya and Solomon Lema Biratu from Ethiopia finished second and third in 2:12:08 and 2:12:38 respectively. Ethiopian runners swept the top three in the women’s race.
Jointly sponsored by China Athletic Association, Anhui Provincial Administration of Sport and the Municipal Government of Hefei, the event attracted 28,000 athletes from 13 foreign countries, the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
It is worthy of note that the event is considered a Gold Label Road Race by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) this year.
China Central Television (CCTV) broadcast live the race, which featured new tracks starting from the northern square of Hefei Binhu International Convention and Exhibition Center, instead of the northern square of the Memorial Museum of Crossing-Yangtze-River Battle as the previous starting site.
While the full marathon races were dominated by foreign participants, Chinese runners defended their honor in half ones.
Wu Xiangdong, a local athlete and also the champion in last year’s event, finished first in the men’s race in 1:05:41. The women’s half marathon race winner, Che Jinhua, came from Anhui too.
