South Anhui International Cultural Tourism Demonstration Area, which consists of seven cities in the south of Anhui province, recorded 259.4 billion yuan ($37.7 billion) in tourism revenue in 2016, up 18.8 percent from a year earlier, the provincial economic watchdog said.

The region received roughly 4.0 million overseas visitors and 263.0 million domestic ones last year, representing a year-on-year rise of 10.3 percent and 17.0 percent, respectively.

Guided by the Development and Reform Commission of Anhui Province, Huangshan, Chizhou, Xuancheng, Ma’anshan, Wuhu, Tongling and Anqing cities work together to promote their tourist attractions as a whole. That’s how the demonstration area was established.

There are world-renowned destinations in the area, like the Huangshan Mountain, Jiuhua Mountain and ancient villages of Xidi and Hongcun.

Last year, two scenic spots were rated as 5A attractions, the top-rated ones in China. A forest park and a wetland park were upgraded to the state level. In addition, 13 destinations, itineraries and sport events were included among the country’s top ten in respective categories.

The area also stepped up efforts to protect local cultural heritage in the past year. Up to 50 villages were inscribed on China’s fourth list of traditional villages, while 40 ancient buildings in Huangcun village, Jingxian county and Chengkan village, Huizhou district, were renovated as templates for the preservation of cultural heritage.
