The transformation of Huaining from a county-level administration division to a city is on the agenda, the local government said in a reply to a netizen on Monday.
Someone asked about the county's upgrading on the official website of Anqing, a prefecture-level city in East China's Anhui province which governs Huaining.
In response, the county government says a local political consultative conference has passed a bill applying for a city status for Huaining.
The application lived up to local people's keen anticipation and came after the government's rational and down-to-earth deliberation, according to the reply.
Once the application is approved by the State Council, China's cabinet, Huaining will see a status boost in regional development hierarchy, Yu Xuefeng, head of the county government, said at the meeting.
The county's gross domestic product (GDP) stood at 18.17 billion yuan ($2.67 billion) in 2015, up 7.7 percent from a year earlier.
Qianshan, a county bordering Huaining, is also seeking a rise in status.
