An institute in Hefei, capital of East China’s Anhui province, succeeded in using a tokamak to achieve a high-constraint-model plasma driven by non-inductive electricity for over 60 seconds.

The achievement by the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences was announced at the 26th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference, held in Kyoto, Japan from October 17 to 22.

As a summary of the conference says, the successful test with the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) is of significance to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), an international nuclear fusion project involving nations like the United States, France and China.

EAST holds plasma longest among all nuclear fusion devices in the world.
