East China's Anhui province secured the first medal at the Rio Summer Olympics when Deng Shudi and his gymnast teammates won a bronze with a score of 271.122 on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old gymnast began with a fault in floor, scoring 13.833. But he caught up in the later events, achieving 14.958, 14.6, 15.2 and 15.8 in pommel horse, rings, vault and parallel bars, respectively.
Deng is jointly trained by sports authorities in Anhui and Guizhou provinces. He is the only member in Chinese men’s team to take part in all the six gymnastic events.
Japan claimed the gold in the men’s team final, while Russia won the silver.
Deng is slated to compete in all-round and parallel bars on August 11 and 17, respectively.
