Zhang Shengwu, a farmer from east China's Anhui province, was recently granted a patent from the State Intellectual Property Office, for a new submarine he built at home. Zhang, 51, who is also successful in the construction materials business, got interested in inventing things after watching a TV show about inventions years ago.
Zhang suddenly came up with the idea of building a homemade submarine in 2014, although that was dismissed by his wife as, "too hard, dangerous and costly." But Zhang decided not to give up and finally he managed to create a submarine for 5,000 yuan ($770) in two months.
The submarine, powered by a motor used for tricycles and four 12-volt batteries, is able to dive about one meter under water.Talking about plans for his next invention plan, Zhang said he would focus on the construction of a new rescue boat to help more people.
