A series of tunnels through the Dabie Mountains won the National Civil Engineering Zhan Tianyou Awards, following the Yangtze River Bridge in Wuhu and the expressway running from Tongling to Huangshan, said the builder.
The eight tunnels are part of the expressway linking Lu'an of Anhui province and Wuhan, capital of Hubei province, which is a major section of the much longer Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway, according to Anhui Transportation Investment Group Co.
The Zhantianyou Awards, the highest honor in Chinese civil engineering, are given biennially for excellence of scientific and technological achievements in the sector, especially for contributions to energy conservation, environmental protection and sustainable development.
The cost of the project was cut by more than 30 million yuan ($4.9 million). Further, up to 9 million yuan will be saved every year on power supply to the tunnels, said the company.
On top of the awards, the builder has got five patents for the project, a company source said.
