Anhui Agricultural University (AHAU), a prestigious university located in Hefei, the capital city of Anhui Province, grows out of National Anhui University established in 1928. She became an independent college in 1954 and in 1996 was renamed as Anhui Agricultural University under the approval of China Ministry of Education. AHAU covers an area of 210 hectares with a total building space of 750,000 square meters, and her garden-like campus is set amidst the picturesque scenery of green trees and beautiful flowers with a peaceful and tranquil layout.
As a teaching-research key university of Anhui Province, AHAU is led by life science and featured by agricultural and forestry disciplines, with agriculture, engineering, humanities, science, law, medicine, economy and management developing side by side and complementing to each other. There are 18 schools, 59 labs for basic academic courses, 28 general and 3 special research institutions, as well as some other teaching-research-aided departments, such as Biotechnology Center, the school library and the Records Office, and the Administrative Center of Agricultural Garden and Experimental Stations. 10 field practice or internship bases are on the campus while 121 out of campus. The up-to-date school library has a holding of 1,320,000 volumes with the modern information service and internet access.
Currently the total enrolment amounts to 24,507 with 17,638 full-time students - 15,904 undergraduates and 1,003 postgraduates. There are 1,454 in-service staff and 721 faculty members - 103 professors, 214 associate professors, including 30 doctoral and 209 master’s supervisors. 66 distinguished scholars have got the “Specialist Allowance” from the Nation’s State Council and 51 from the local government. 9 young scholars have been awarded with the title of “Young Expert with Outstanding Contributions” and more have been recommended as future academic leaders of various disciplines.
AHAU is among the first group of universities in early 1980s authorized by the State Council Academic Degree Appraisal Committee to confer master’s degrees and again in 1998 to confer doctoral degrees. For the time being, AHAU now has 1 postdoctoral mobile research center, 10 doctoral and 63 master’s conferring points, and 2 special master’s conferring points, 58 undergraduate and 5 second-bachelor programs. In addition, there are 9 provincial (ministerial) key disciplines, 1 national key laboratory base, 3 provincial (ministerial) key laboratories and 1 research base of social sciences.
Being education-oriented and teaching-centered, AHAU takes priority in the teaching reforms, focuses on improving her teaching quality and developing students’ comprehensive abilities, and keeps updating her teaching facilities and lab equipment. As a result, among her 60,000 alumni in the fields of agriculture, science and technology as well as administration and management, there are 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 9 provincial and ministerial ministers, over 200 high-rank officials and 6,000 professionals with senior academic titles.
Meanwhile, AHAU also undertakes lots of research tasks. In the recent three years, 553 research projects with total RMB27,450,000 yuan have been granted, among which 19 are supported by the National Fund for Natural Sciences and 42 by “863 Project”,”973 Project”, or “948 Project”, etc.. Altogether 53 academic works, 134 course books and 1,309 papers have been published, 223 out of which have gained provincial or ministerial prizes. Besides, AHAU also actively participates in the international cooperation and exchange programs with the universities and research institutions from over 29 countries and regions.
Last but not least, guided by the Central Government’s policy of Serving “the Agriculture, the Rural and the Farmers”, AHAU, with her evident scientific and educational advantages, dedicates herself to the agricultural and rural development in Anhui Province by offering farmers technologies and trainings and, is well known for her “Dabie Mountain Road” Model – “applying modern agricultural technologies to the mountainous areas to help the farmers of Anhui Province shake off poverty”. Throughout all these years’ practice, AHAU has made unusually great contributions to the rural development as well as the local economy.
