Hui School of Block Print
2009-10-21 15:50

Hui School of Woodblock Print came into being in Huizhou in the middle period of the Ming Dynasty; it represents a blend of techniques of the Hui painters and the Hui carvers. Artists used traditional Chinese paintings as models to engrave with fine techniques. Their artworks are elegant and expressive. At the end of the Ming Dynasty, Hu Zhengyan of Xiuning County created the techniques of overprint named "Ban" and "Gong Hua" (similar to modern relief printing). His two artworks, namely, "On the Art of Painting" and "On the Art of Painting Plate", initiated chromatic block print in ancient China.
