Bozhou City was assigned prefectural administrative authority by the State Council in July, 2000. Located in northwest of Anhui, it borders Jiangsu, Shandong, and Henan. Being on the plain along Yellow River and Huaihe River, its climate is of subtropic monsoon. The city, including three counties -- Guoyang, Mengcheng and Lixin, and one district -- Qiaocheng, claims an area of 8,374 km², with 5.3 million people (including 300,000 urban and township residents).
Bozhou enjoys convenient means of communication and transportation, with the Euro-Asian Continent Bridge to its north, 60 km to Shangqiu Airport of Henan Province, and 120 km to Fuyang Airport of Anhui Province. Many railways and highways intersect at the city, such as Beijing-Kowloon Railway, Xuzhou-Fuyang Railway, National Road 311 and 105, National Defense Highway of 0908, Provincial Highway 202, 305 and 307, Beijing-Jinggangshan Expressway and Jieshou-Fuyang-Bengbu Expressway. The navigation route of Guohe River and New Cihuai River flowing nearby can reach Shanghai and Hangzhou straightly.
Bozhou has a long history. It used to be the capital of the Shang Dynasty, dating back 3,700 yeas ago. In the Tang Dynasty, Bozhou was one of the ten states authorized by the government. At the time of the Three Kingdoms (220-265), Bozhou was the second capital of the Wei Kingdom (220-265). For hundreds of years, many elites have come from this beautiful and rich land, such as the king of Chengshang in the Shang Dynasty, the founding father of Daoism -- Laozi, the famous ancient philosopher -- Zhuangzi, the King of Wei(220-265) -- Caocao, the highly skilled doctor -- Huatuo, the respectable philosopher of Taoism -- Chentuan and the famous heroine -- Hua Mulan.
The long history and splendid culture bring out affluent relics of the ancient city. In December, 1986, Bozhou was approved as the national historical cultural city by the State Council. In 1998, it was listed as the national excellent tourism city. There are 18 sites of national and provincial cultural heritage, 36 city cultural relic sites and 150 general cultural relic sites. Among them, there are many famous sites of world fame -- such as Opera Platform, Ruins of Weichi Temple, Underground Passage of Troop- Movement, Huazu Nunnery, Tianjing Palace, the Ancestral Temple of Zhuangzi, and the Ethical Palace.
Bozhou is one of the origins of traditional Chinese medicine, and the high-tech production and development base of traditional Chinese medicine in modern China. There are more than 170 categories with over 400 varieties of raw materials of traditional Chinese medicine. Its annual regular cultivation area occupies one tenth of the national total. China Trading Center of the traditional Chinese medicine (located in Bozhou) is the specialized medicine market whose quality and quantity are the best and the most among the whole nation, ranking highest. Each day there are 6,000 tons of medicines in trade, with 2,600 varieties. The number of customers and clients reaches 50,000 to 60,000 a day. The annual trade volume of traditional Chinese medicine is about 100 million yuan RMB.
Bozhou is called ¡°the hometown of wine¡±. There are more than 250 liquor companies. GuJing Distillery is called ¡°Peony of Liquor¡± for its crystal clearness and pure fragrance. It is one of the eight famous brands of Chinese liquor. ¡°GuJing Distillery¡± is the national well-known trademark, the value of which is more than 3,500 million yuan RMB. Guoyang Shuanglun Liquor Company, Jingzhong Corp Group, Banqiao Liquor, and so on, are all the famous businesses of liquor in China.
Bozhou is the largest cattle production area. Mengcheng, Lixin and Guoyang have been awarded ¡°National Model County for Cattle-Production by Straw-Feeding¡± -- one of the ten in China -- by the Ministry of Agriculture for five successive years. In 2002, the cattle population of the whole city reached 1,500,000. The number of companies in the city engaged in cattle-slaughtering and processing is nearly 100. Guoyang Yumei Corp Group, Mengcheng Dongsheng Food Company Ltd., and Lixin Lida Company, have the productive capacity of 600,000 cattle slaughtered a year. Mengcheng Wuzhou Food Company Ltd., Lixin Hongfa Beef Company Ltd., and Qiaocheng Zhengyi Beef Company Ltd., process super quality and various small packages of beef -- totaling about 45,000 tons each year. The leather-making companies as Lixin Lvji Leather Factory, Anhui Niupiwang Fashion Company and Shengli Leather Company can produce 1,000,000 finished leather sheets and 600,000 leather products.
Bozhou is the production base of the national excellent agricultural and sideline products and woods. Owing to the temperate and moist climate and sufficient sunshine and rainfall, the soil is fertile. The arable land is about 7,500,000 mu, and the agricultural population is 4,700,000. The average arable land is 1.6 mu per capita. In 2001, the rate of forest-coverage reaches 16.8%, so the city was appraised as the national advanced green city in agricultural plain -- a typical eco-agricultural city. Bozhou abounds with crops -- wheat, soybean, corn, cotton, and tobacco. It is the production base of important national commodity grain and cotton. Bozhou is the biggest production base of vegetables in northern Anhui. In 1996, it was ranked as the National Vegetable Production City -- the first fifteen in China. Meantime, Bozhou Vegetable Wholesale Market is the biggest trading market in northern Anhui -- the "National Appointed Wholesale Market of Fresh Agricultural and Sideline Products¡±. The so-called ¡°tribute food¡± -- Guoyang dried moss has been sold both at home and abroad. Bozhou is also the hometown of parasol tree. Therefore, many Japanese and Southeast Asian businessman come here for the sheet material.
Since 1990s, especially after Bozhou became a city with prefectural administrative authority, according to its own resources, Bozhou has further shaped its own principle of reform and opening. Its economy and social utilities have developed in a rapid and healthy way continually, which forms an economical system consisting of industry, private economy and unique local economy. Among them, the industry has developed rapidly. The industrial system has been formed gradually, represented by Gujing Company Group, Chaolun Paper Industry, Kangda Machinery, and Wanfo Cement Factory. Recently, the city government decides to further develop the restructuring of traditional industry by introducing advanced high technology. It is also to make them become the new developing highlights. Under the development of market economy, the production share of private economy makes up one third of the total volume of the economy. Privately-owned companies as Jingzhong Company Group, Kangda Chemical Industry and Yazhu Diamond Factory, have been the pioneers among the same trade in Anhui.
