Luzhou eggshell carving is a folk art of carving delicate patterns on eggshells. The egg carving technique could date back to Ming and Qing Dynasties, people gave red eggs as a present during festival occasions. Then, people drew flowers, birds, fishes, insects, facial makeup and other patterns on eggshells for good luck. Later, Artists emptied the egg mixture and carved beautiful patterns on the egg surface, gradually forming the craft of eggshell carving.
Making one beautiful eggshell carving work should go through seven procedures, select eggshells, empty the egg mixture, clean and dry the eggshell, draw patterns on the surface, finely carve, remove stains and decorate eggshells. Artists use single-sided razor blades, egg shells, pencils and erasers to create eggshell carving works.
As one of the provincial intangible cultural heritages, Luzhou eggshell carving skills are mainly inherited by Ma Jiaxuan and Wang Jian. While inheriting the skill, they also form their own artistic styles, which enjoys good reputation in Hefei.
